Raw ground beef recalled

Amity Packing Co. Inc., of Chicago, is recalling about 2,020 pounds of raw ground beef that may be contaminated with plastic, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today.

The items were produced on Jan. 6 and sent to retail locations in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the service said in a statement.

It said they are one-pound vacuum-packed packages containing "Pre 95% LEAN/5% FAT GROUND BEEF" with lot code 0060, case code 11402 and USE/FREEZE BY date of 01/31/2020 on the label. The products subject to recall bear establishment number "EST. 6916" printed on the right front side of the package.

The problem was discovered afrter two consumers reported finding clear, thin pliable plastic in raw ground beef, the service said. It said there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions, and anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumers who have purchased the products should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase, the service said.
