Morgan signs contract with Jazz

DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette

Former Indiana forward Juwan Morgan signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Utah Jazz, the Hoosiers announced.

An Exhibit 10 contract includes an invitation to training camp, meaning Morgan will probably play preseason games with the Jazz. After that, he'll likely be sent to the team's G League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars, for the regular season.

"All hard work brings a profit but this is only the beginning," Morgan said in a statement. "I'm ready to do whatever is needed of me to help the team succeed."

The Waynesville, Missouri, native played with the Jazz in the NBA Summer League, averaging 4.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in six games and putting up eight points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in one head-turning performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Morgan was a two-time All-Big Ten performer in four seasons with the Hoosiers, averaging 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds in his senior year of 2018-19. Despite that performance, he did not get picked in June's NBA Draft, an oversight that I continue to believe will come back to haunt some NBA teams.

He clearly made an impression with the Jazz this summer and it seems like he will get his shot in the pros in the U.S., even if he has to work his way up from the G League. Thomas Bryant, like Morgan a member of the 2015 Indiana recruiting class, had to do the same and he is now thriving with the Washington Wizards.

Morgan is the type of player every team wants to have: hard-working, humble and willing to embrace any role assigned to him. At 6-foot-8, 232 pounds he isn't overly big for an NBA power forward and he might not be quick enough to be a wing, but I still think there is a way to carve out a role for Morgan, especially if he proves he can shoot consistently from the outside, a skill that eluded him at Indiana. He'll get a chance to prove himself with the Jazz in the coming months.
