K's drop to 0-3-0 on road

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

Now that they are playing some road games, the Komets are discovering just how difficult those can be.

They lost 5-4 tonight to the Cincinnati Cyclones in front of an announced crowd of 2,853 at U.S. Bank Arena, dropping them to 0-3-0 away from Memorial Coliseum.

And their next two games are on the road – 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, against the Wings.

On Wednesday, the Komets (5-4-1) rallied to tie it at 4 with an Olivier Galipeau shot from the blue line that took advantage of a screen from Taylor Ross, who had been checked to the ice, 15:46 into the third period.

The Cyclones’ Frank Hora needed only 47 seconds to glide into the Fort Wayne zone and score from the right circle.

It was Cody Sol’s first game against his former team, Fort Wayne, and he assisted on one of Justin Vaive’s two goals.

The Cyclones (5-2-1) opened the scoring when Vaive netted a one-timer from the front of the net, and they made it 2-0 when Brady Vail finished off an odd-man rush.

Fort Wayne answered with goals from Alan Lyszczarczyk, who was stationed off the left goalpost, and Shawn Szydlowski, taking advantage of a Matthew Boudens cross-ice pass 4:40 into the second period.

Another odd-man rush set up Cincinnati’s Jesse Schultz for a goal and a 3-2 lead before A.J. Jenks tied it at the end of a tic-tac-toe passing play.

But Vaive netted a 20-foot shot for a 4-3 lead at 15:23.

Fort Wayne’s starting goaltender, Dylan Ferguson, stopped 7 of 9 shots before leaving the game with an injury. His replacement, Matthew Villalta, stopped 10 of 13. Cincinnati’s Sean Romeo stopped 27 of 31 shots.

Notes: Fort Wayne’s Mason Bergh failed to score on a penalty shot. … Brady Ross made his season debut and had 14 penalty minutes, including a misconduct for continuing an altercation.
