Brett McKenzie was on a tear in the Komets’ three games at Boise, Idaho, totaling four goals and an assist.
That included two goals and three points in Saturday’s 5-4 loss to the Idaho Steelheads.
Brady Shaw had two goals and two assists for the Komets, in front of an announced crowd of 4,807 at CenturyLink Arena.
The Komets finished their road trip 3-3-0.
The Komets lost two of the three games at Boise and their cause wasn’t helped by a slew of injuries to Matthew Boudens, Shawn St-Amant, Brad Morrison, Brad Ross, A.J. Jenks and Dylan Ferguson, none of whom were able to play Saturday.
After giving up four goals on the first 11 Idaho shots in a 4-2 loss Friday, the Komets got off to a similarly poor start Saturday. Despite McKenzie’s goal 16 seconds into the first period, the Steelheads took a 4-1 lead on their first 14 shots, getting tallies from Spencer Naas, Will Merchant, Marco Roy and Colton Saucerman.
Shaw netted a power-play goal for Fort Wayne 8:35 into the second period, after McKenzie’s crossing pass, and McKenzie made it 4-3 by scoring from 15 feet out during a power play at 16:51.
The Steelheads got some breathing room from a Brady Norrish goal 11:49 into the third period, but Shaw netted another power-play goal at 18:23.
For the Komets (15-9-2), who lost for only the third time in the last 10 games, Cole Kehler stopped 21 shots. For Idaho (13-10-5), Colton Point stopped 35.
Fort Wayne scored on 3 of 5 power plays. Idaho was 1 for 4.
The Komets play host to the Indy Fuel at 8 p.m. Friday at Memorial Coliseum.
