Former Notre Dame running back George Atkinson III, who ran for 943 yards and 10 touchdowns in three seasons with the Irish and was part of the 2012 team that went undefeated in the regular season, died late Monday, just days after his 27th birthday. The cause of his death has not been released.
Atkinson, son of former Oakland Raiders safety George Atkinson II, played 21 games in the NFL with the Raiders and Browns. Atkinson's twin brother, Josh Atkinson, who also played for the Irish, died by suicide in late December 2018, shortly after the death of the twins' mother from complications related to Crohn's disease.
George Atkinson III published an article in The Unsealed in October of this year in which he discussed the grief he felt following the deaths of his mother and brother. The article was meant to help people going through similar situations feel more comfortable asking for help when they're dealing with difficult circumstances.
"I am still struggling," he wrote. "My mother’s birthday just passed and I know the holidays this year won’t be easy. But I am trying to take life one day at a time."
