Pregame: Purdue Fort Wayne (11-7, 3-0) vs. Oral Roberts (7-11, 3-0)
ELIZABETH WYMAN | The Journal Gazette
Jon Coffman compared tonight's opponent, Oral Roberts, to Cleveland State and Austin Peay. Purdue Fort Wayne (11-7, 3-0 Summit League) narrowly beat Cleveland State 82-79 back in November and got dominated by Austin Peay 95-68 on Dec. 15 – the last game it lost. The common denominator in both those games is the Mastodons got killed on the boards. There were out-rebounded 49-38 by Cleveland State, but they scored 24 points off of 19 CSU turnovers, and were out-rebounded 45-28 by Austin Peay.
In a battle for first place in the league, Oral Roberts (7-11, 3-0 SL) is a big, physical team that has the means to out-rebound this PFW team. Also, they're fifth in the nation in total rebounds with 650 and 34th in the nation in total assists with 249.
The Mastodons have John Konchar on their side, but the Golden Eagles have big man Emmanuel Nzekwesi, who's 16th in the nation in total field goals made (118), 27th in total rebounds (142) and 54th in double-doubles with five.
PFW has been excellent in this five-game winning streak. The help defense, especially within five feet of the basket, has looked solid and the team's finally getting additional scoring form players besides Konchar and Kason Harrell.
Game starts at 7 p.m. at the Coliseum.
