Indiana Tech athletes win awards
Indiana Tech sophomore Brandon Smiley was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week. At the Pepsi Florida Relay, Smiley ran the fastest time in the NAIA this season in the 200 meters with a personal-best and automatic qualifying standard time of 20.80 in the open section.
Tech Freshman Destiny Copeland was named the WHAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week. Copeland set the program record in the long jump this past weekend at the Pepsi Florida relays with a personal-best mark of 6.02m/19-9 to finish in fifth place in the open section.
Tech Freshman Payton Robinson was named the WHAC Softball Player of the Week. Robinson hit .545 with six hits, a double, a triple and two home runs while driving in a team-best seven runs and slugging 1.364 on the week.
Tech sophomore Andrew Neller was named the WHAC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week. Neller led the Warriors in ground balls (22) and faceoffs (36 wins, 65.8%) while helping Tech limit its opponents to just eight goals per game.
Tech seniors Jennifer Banks and Bailey Childs were honored by the WHAC as the Women's Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Banks scored 11 goals and tallied three assists on the week to lead the Warriors in goals and points (14) while helping the team go 3-0, including an upset over No. 3-ranked University of the Cumberlands. Childs led the Warriors in draw controls (18) and ground balls (7) while adding seven goals and three assists.
