Rep. Jim Banks, R-3rd, and Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., were among Republican lawmakers recognized Thursday by President Donald Trump for their ardent defense of him during House impeachment hearings and the Senate trial that ended in Trump's acquittal this week.
Banks and Braun attended Trump's televised celebration of the verdict at the White House.
"A man who just became a senator, and he's a little bit like me – we have a couple of them – very successful guy in business, and he said, 'What the hell, I'll run for the Senate from Indiana,' " Trump said about Braun, who unseated Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly in the 2018 election and took office in January 2019.
"And he ran, and I saw him on television destroying his opponent in a debate. I said, 'You know, this guy could win,' and I got behind him. And Mike Braun, you have done some great job, thank you very much," Trump said to him.
Braun stood to applause from the rest of Trump's audience. Trump could be heard saying, "Tough, tough."
Banks was among a group of GOP House members Trump described as "these great warriors" who "really fought hard for us."
"Jim Banks of Indiana – Jim, thank you, great job," Trump said as Banks stood to applause.
Banks later tweeted, "Thank you Mr. President! Acquitted for life!" followed by two American flag emojis.
