MUNCIE – It took more points that had been scored in any previous state championship match since rally scoring was introduced in 2004, but Brownstown Central ended Bellmont's title hopes with a 3-1 victory Saturday in the Class 3A state championship match at Worthen Arena at Ball State.
Bellmont trailed by five points early in the first set, but slowly crept back into the set, finally tying up the set at 10-10 and then pulling ahead 11-10. Neither team dominated the rest of the way, as Bellmont won the first 25-21. It was the first time Brownstown Central had dropped a set since Oct. 3.
In the second set, it was Bellmont that took an early lead, going up 7-2 and leading by as much as 13-7. But the Braves won the last eight points to claim a 25-21 victory and tie the match at 1-1.
Then came the marathon third set. Bellmont had set point at 24-20, but Brownstown Central won four straight points to tie the game 24-24. From there, things got silly, as the set was tied eight more times before the Braves finally won at 34-32.
The fourth and final set started tight, but after a tie a 5-5 Bellmont fell behind, and Brownstown Central stayed in control as they won the final 25-19.
Bellmont's Rachel McBride was named the Mental Attitude Award winner.
