Huntington North tops Columbia City


A two-point halftime lead turned into the final margin for Huntington North on Tuesday, as the Vikings knocked off Columbia City, 46-44, in Class 4A boys basketball sectional action in Huntington.

Four players for Huntington North (9-14) scored in double figures – Sam Thompson (13), Deven Newcomb (12), Jordan Hollowell (11) and Dominic Cardwell (10), overcoming a 23-point night for senior Mitchell Wilson of Columbia City (10-13).

New Haven awaits the Vikings in the first semifinal at Huntington North on Friday.



NORTHROP 52, NORTH SIDE 48: At Carroll, the opener nearly featured an upset, as the Legends led by two points after three quarters. Qualen Pettus scored a game-high 16 points for the Bruins (12-12), who advanced to face the host Chargers Friday, while North Side (1-21) got 14 points from Brashawn Basset.

EAST NOBLE 51, DEKALB 36: At Carroll, Hayden Jones finished 9-of-11 from the line en route to 16 points for the Knights (12-11), who will play Snider in Friday’s second semifinal, while Connor Penrod netted 14 for DeKalb (6-17).



CONCORDIA 49, BISHOP DWENGER 39: In Garrett, an 8-0 run to close out the final 2:15 of the first half propelled the Cadets (11-11) to the opening-round victory. Brayden Pearson scored 13 and Evan Minger added 11 for Concordia, while Hunter Burns’ 12-point night proved tops for the Saints (6-17).


BELLMONT 64, EASTERN 41: In Ossian, the Braves (11-12) breezed to victory thanks to an 18-3 margin in the second quarter, earning a date against No. 6 Norwell Friday.



WABASH 53, BLUFFTON 44: In North Manchester, the Tigers led 34-33 after three quarters before the Apaches (19-4) rallied to advance. Bluffton, the ACAC regular season champions, finished 15-8.

CANTERBURY 58, MANCHESTER 56: In North Manchester, the Cavaliers held a six-point edge with eight minutes to go, then held on to face Wabash in Friday’s first semifinal. Canterbury (11-11) moved back to .500 with the victory.



FREMONT 50, BETHANY CHRISTIAN 40: In Fremont, two Eagles – Ethan Bontrager (15 points, seven rebounds) and Logan Brace (13 points, nine rebounds) nearly notched double-doubles as Fremont (8-15) advanced to play Lakewood Park in Friday’s second semifinal.


SOUTHERN WELLS 63, SMITH ACADEMY 28: In Poneto, the second game featured the Raiders jumping out to a 19-3 lead after one quarter. Southern Wells (6-17) will play Southwood in the second semifinal Friday, while Smith Academy ended its season at 0-23. Friday’s first game features Northfield, an 85-50 victor over North Miami, taking on Lakeland Christian.


East Allen County Schools Superintendent Marilyn Hissong told the school board Tuesday that Mike Smith is the new head football coach at Woodlan. Smith comes to EACS from Hamilton Community Schools, where he is a business teacher, Hissong said. It is unclear whether the board approved him Tuesday.
