EcoLab set to grow in Huntington

A Huntington operation that specializes in products for water, hygiene and infection prevention is expanding operations, officials announced Tuesday. Ecolab Inc. plans to create up to 24 new jobs by the end of 2022.

The St. Paul, Minnesota-based company will invest more than $9 million to expand its operations in Huntington, installing new equipment at its 150,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at 970 E. Tipton St. and increasing warehouse space at its 132,000-square-foot distribution center at 68 Commercial Road. The upgrades are expected to be completed in 2021.

Ecolab, which employs more than 100 in Huntington, is making the investment to meet increased demand for its hand soaps and sanitizers during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the future as its customers maintain safe, clean and healthy operations for consumers, officials said.

The company is hiring for positions in supply chain, distribution, production and R&D. Interested applicants may apply online.

Layoffs jump 17.6% in US in November

Layoffs spiked in November and the number of job openings slipped, signaling the job market has stalled as the resurgent novel coronavirus has brought about another wave shutdowns of restaurants and bars and hobbled consumer spending.

While the layoffs were concentrated among restaurants, bars and hotels, the slowdown in job postings was widespread across most industries, showing a reluctance by businesses to hire amid a pandemic-fueled recession.

The number of open jobs at the end of November slipped 1.6%, to 6.5 million, the Labor Department said Tuesday, its first drop since August. Layoffs, however, soared 17.6%, to 1.9 million, driven mostly by job cuts at restaurants, bars and hotels, which more than doubled.

Ford, Hyundai win automotive awards

Ford Motor Co.'s new electric Mustang Mach E is the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, and the company's F-150 pickup won truck honors from a group of auto journalists.

Hyundai's Elantra compact car took Car of the Year, as all three awards were announced during a Monday webcast.

About 50 automotive journalists serve as judges for the three awards, which are announced every January. They're chosen from dozens of candidates and must be new or substantially changed. Automakers often use the awards in advertising.

The judges evaluate finalists on value, innovation, design, performance, safety, technology and driver satisfaction.

Online sales soar over holiday season 

With many people choosing not to venture out to buy gifts, this past holiday season saw a record-breaking $188.2 billion in U.S. online purchases, which represents more than 32% growth from the year before.

According to Adobe Analytics, average daily online revenue exceeded $3.1 billion from November through December, up from $2.3 billion in 2019.

For the first time, every day of the holiday shopping season exceeded $1 billion in online sales, fulfilling expectations that the pandemic would push consumers to spend a record amount of holiday items from their homes.

Online revenue levels increased over Thanksgiving week then set records Black Friday and Cyber Monday at $9 billion and $10.8 billion, respectively.
