NEWS SERVICES

Celebrity zookeeper and animal TV show host Jack Hanna has been diagnosed with dementia and will retire from public life, his family said.

In a news release Wednesday, his family added that it's believed he now has Alzheimer's disease that has quickly progressed in the last few months.

The 74-year-old Hanna was director of the Columbus Zoo from 1978 to 1992.

“Dad advocated for improved wildlife habitats and focused on connecting the community with animals,” the statement signed by his three daughters said. Hanna continued to be a spokesperson for the Ohio zoo until he retired in 2020.

Hanna is also well-known for his live animal demonstrations on talk shows hosted by Johnny Carson, David Letterman and James Corden.

'Iron Anniversary'

HBO is celebrating 10 years of “Game of Thrones” in grand style.

For what they're calling “The Iron Anniversary,” the network has designed a spotlight page offering “curated tours” of the show “for every level of fandom,” as well as 150 videos of behind-the-scenes interviews and clips.

There's also promotional tie-ins to coincide with the monthlong celebration, which will also feature a “Game of Thrones” marathon of the first season on HBO2 starting Saturday, and all 73 episodes of the show available on HBO Max – tied to cast members' rallying fans to contribute to their favorite charities.

Amid the merrymaking surrounding the successful adaptation of author George R.R. Martin's “A Song of Ice and Fire” series comes a “one-of-a-kind Imperial egg by Faberge,” which was co-designed by the series' Emmy Award-winning costume designer Michele Clapton and Faberge's head designer, Liisa Tallgren.

With its “intricate and enchanting design,” the egg has an exterior that's purple, blue, red and silver with diamond accents. The inside is ruby red with a winged dragon and a miniature version of the crown – set with a pear-cut ruby sourced in Mozambique, representing the headwear Daenerys Targaryen would have worn had she taken the Iron Throne.

The egg cost $2.22 million.
