Crossing guard struck by bus

Police: Injuries not life-threatening

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A Fort Wayne Community Schools bus struck a school crossing guard, who was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Tuesday, authorities said.

No schoolchildren were on the bus when the crossing guard was struck about 2:30 p.m. near Lane Middle School, said Krista Stockman, FWCS spokeswoman. Neither the crossing guard nor the bus driver was identified.

The bus was apparently turning left from Vance Avenue onto Reed Road when it hit the crossing guard. The bus stopped about halfway into the intersection and remained there while police investigated.

Stockman said crossing guards are hired by the police department. Fort Wayne Police spokesman John Chambers said the crossing guard did not have life-threatening injuries. However, the person's condition was not available Tuesday night.
