Man being evaluated after threat of jumping

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

A man threatened to jump off the Wells Street Bridge on Friday after police said he was involved in a fight at another location.

The 47-year-old man, who was not identified by police, went to the bridge after the fight, climbed over the side and threatened to jump, according to a news release. When officers arrived, “he decided to first sit on the bridge over the rail and then after briefly talking with officers climbed down to hang on the cement overhang,” the release states.

He asked officers for help, a police spokeswoman said, and they “directed him into the water, which was about an 8-foot drop from where he was hanging.”

Fort Wayne firefighters were able to get him to the shore and take him into custody. He was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation, said Sofia Rosales-Scatena, a public information officer with the Fort Wayne Police Department.
