Man shot during robbery attempt

JIM CHAPMAN | The Journal Gazette

A man was shot while he tried to rob people at gunpoint in a car at a gas station, police said.

The shooting occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sunoco station at 1416 Oxford St. A man who was in the vehicle had a minor cut and might have been grazed by a bullet. He refused treatment at the scene, police said.

Three people were in the vehicle when Bruce King, 41, approached and told them to hand over items, police said.

Another person who had been in the car walked out of the gas station and saw what was going on. Gunshots were fired, but it's unclear if both parties shot at each other, police said.

Three men fled the area, but were found by police. King, who was found in the 3500 block of Holton Avenue, was found to have been shot and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. King was charged with armed robbery, theft and possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon. The other person who was injured was found in the 3600 block of Reed Street, police said.
