Father of 2 slain celebrating his birthday

Found lying in street; several gunshots heard

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A Fort Wayne man is dead following a shooting on the city's south side.

The Allen County coroner identified the man Friday as Elgin Markeith Davis, 34. His death is the 41st homicide this year in Allen County.

Davis was found lying in the street in the 4600 block of Werling Drive about 11:20 p.m. Thursday.

Several people called police dispatchers, saying they heard multiple gunshots in the area, Fort Wayne police said.

Davis was the father of two young children and a construction worker, his cousin, Starla McGraw said. He attended Lakeside Middle School and Paul Harding High School and played football, basketball and baseball.

“He did it all,” McGraw said, “He even tried hockey.”

Davis was partying on his birthday at a house on Werling Drive when he was shot, she said. She didn't know the circumstances of the shooting, she said.

City police ask that anyone with any information call the detective bureau at 260-427-1201.

McGraw said the Davis family is one of the city's largest families.

“Our family is really close-knit. We have monthly birthday parties and yearly family reunions,” said McGraw, who is about three years younger than her cousin.

“I'm pretty sure they (the police) will figure it out,” McGraw said.
