NACS to unveil contract details

To hear public views on teacher pact

ASHLEY SLOBODA | The Journal Gazette

Northwest Allen County Schools officials will present a tentative teachers contract to the school board Monday night – and the public can weigh in.

The hearing is set for 7 p.m. in the Perry Hill Elementary School cafeteria, 13121 Coldwater Road. Attendees should enter through Door 1.

The proposed collective bargaining agreement between the district and Northwest Allen County Educators Association is an update of terms approved last year, expiring June 30, 2021.

The 25-page document, available at www.nacs.k12.in.us, addresses COVID-19, specifically how coronavirus-related absences affect retirement benefits.

Under the current contract, returning teachers accumulating the maximum number of sick leave days are eligible for an additional contribution into the teacher's retirement plan account.

The proposed terms make exceptions for certain COVID-19 absences this academic year. Those missed days won't count against the number of unused sick leave days for purposes of calculating the additional contribution.

Steve Driver, union president, declined to comment about the tentative contract until the agreement is approved by the teachers and district.

Ratification is expected Nov. 9.
