Purdue Fort Wayne held off a late charge from Detroit Mercy to win 62-60 at Memorial Coliseum on Thursday behind nine points and 10 rebounds for Ra Kpedi and 10 points for Damian Chong Qui.
The Mastodons (8-7, 4-3 Horizon) picked up its third straight, climbing above .500 overall and in Horizon League play.
Detroit Mercy (5-8, 3-1) missed a pair of 3-point attempts in the final 12 seconds that would have tied the game at 61. After Kpedi grabbed the rebound on Antoine Davis's miss, PFW's Jalon Pipkins split a pair of free throws, leaving a few seconds left for the Titans, but the visitors couldn't get a tying shot off.
The Mastodons took control of the game with a 15-2 run midway trough the second half that left them ahead 53-46 with 6:45 left. Bobby Planutis, who finished with nine points, made two 3s during the stretch and Deonte Billups put PFW in front for good with a 3.
Purdue Fort Wayne went 11 of 34 from 3-point range and held the Titans to just 36.5% shooting. Davis led all scorers with 17 points.
IOWA 79, PURDUE 66: At West Lafayette, Purdue (11-5, 2-3 Big Ten) saw its five-game winning streak come to an end. Hawkeyes center Monika Czinano led all scorers with 27 points on 12-for-14 shooting and Caitlin Clark, the nation's leading scorer, had 24 points on 14 of 16 at the foul line and added nine assists and eight rebounds. Iowa (9-4, 3-1) shot 0 for 15 from 3-point range, but 68% from inside the arc. Purdue, led by Abbey Ellis's 18 points, shot 37% overall.
