Kendallville publisher George O. Witwer dies at 92

George Osburn Witwer, publisher emeritus and principal owner of KPC Media Group Inc., died Thursday at his home in Key West, Florida. He was 92.

Witwer worked for several years on the East Coast as a journalist before becoming editor and general manager of The News Sun in Kendallville in 1962, according to KPC Media Group's website. Witwer purchased Kendallville Publishing Co., the forerunner of KPC Media Group, in 1969.

Witwer retired as publisher in 1996 but remained active on the company's board of directors.

KPC Media Group publishes newspapers in several northeast Indiana counties, including The News Sun, The Star in Auburn, The Herald Republican in Angola and The Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly.

In 2007, he received the Hoosier State Press Association's Charlie Biggs Commitment to Community Lifetime Achievement Award.

Witwer was born in Owosso, Michigan, and grew up in South Bend. A graduate of Yale University, he had a brief stint with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Witwer's wife, Dorothy, died in 2015. He is survived by four children, a sister and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at later dates in Key West and Kendallville, according to the KPC Media Group website.
