An Angola man has been charged with battering police officers during a Steuben County traffic stop, Indiana State Police said Monday.

Aaron J. Sylvia, 40, was preliminarily charged with battery against a public safety official, battery against a public safety official engaged in official duty and three misdemeanors, state police said in a statement. Sylvia was being held at the county jail after medical evaluation and clearance at a hospital.

State police said Trooper Ben Walker stopped Sylvia's vehicle about 11:30 p.m. Saturday for speeding on County Road 275 North near County Road 85 West.

Based on a reasonable suspicion, he called Cpl. Alex Harris of the county sheriff's department, who had a narcotics K-9, to conduct an open-air search, state police said.

Walker asked Sylvia to exit the vehicle, but state police said Sylvia resisted, punching and kicking both officers.

A third officer, Trooper Dan Burkey, arrived at the scene and also became involved in the altercation to restrain Sylvia, state police said. Sylvia was restrained after several other officers arrived to assist.

Walker, Harris and Burkey all received injuries that were evaluated, and the officers were released without further medical attention, state police said. They said Walker was also assisted by Angola police and Indiana conservation officers.
